On April 25, 2026, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other cabinet members were present at this dinner. There was a shooting at the main security screening area, and the Secret Service was able to evacuate those people at the event.
The suspect of the shooting is California resident Cole Tomas Allen, who is an academic tutor, video game developer and mechanical engineer. He was arrested on the scene and was carrying two firearms and several knives. The suspect had a manifesto that was emailed to his family members. On April 27, it was announced that Allen was being charged with attempting to assassinate the president of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition through interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.
There were no deaths from this shooting. A bullet struck a law enforcement officer who was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, but the officer was admitted to a hospital and released. The suspect was also injured with a knee injury as a result of being tackled.
In a statement on President Trump’s social media platform, he said, “Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement.” Former President Barack Obama also responded to the incident by condemning the violence. He said, “… it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy.”
Ultimately, this event shows the growing tensions in the political climate of the country. This incident has been the third assassination attempt on President Trump following the attempts in Pennsylvania and Florida.
