The FIFA World Cup is the most watched sporting event in the world. Hosted every four years, the international competition attracts a global audience in the hundreds of millions. Recently, the 2022 World Cup has brought this to the billions. While the world waits excitedly for this year’s World Cup, FIFA faces significant challenges despite the official first round approaching in three months, starting on June 11.
One notable challenge is geopolitical tension, specifically between the United States, a host country for this year, and Iran, a participating country. Recently, the U.S. and Israel have called for strikes on Iran, leading to heavy doubts on whether Iran will actually compete. Professional players representing Iran in this year’s World Cup have also faced struggles. Iranian players face pressure for their participation and their silence or voices on political issues. Iranian staff, officials, including players may also face issues in entry to the U.S. due to the ongoing tensions between the U.S.and Iran.
The U.S. is not the only host country with complications. Mexico, another host country, has been met with severe security concerns. Jalisco, including Nuevo Leon are Mexican states containing host cities, which are Guadalajara and Monterrey, have been targets of drug-related violence. Guadalajara, expected to host four matches, has been a particular target, in which disruptions such as road blockages, vehicle seizing and destruction have been occurring often. Mexico City, another host city, although not a main target of violence, has been under surveillance for the upcoming games.
The Mexican government has not been quiet with their response. Following the heavy drug-related violence, president Claudia Sheinbaum has made heavy promises regarding the issues of World Cup security, stating “all the guarantees” for safety, planning to deploy 100,000 security personnel in the three host cities. FIFA president Gianni Infantino also expresses confidence in Mexico’s ability to host the games, stating that he feels “very assured.” There have been no changes for venues and FIFA has stayed persistent in Mexico as a host for the World Cup.
