Issues on income inequality have been increasingly argued upon, especially during the massive growth of the already top earners. The world’s richest have billions, even up to the hundreds of billions. The debate expresses concern about those with lower incomes and brings awareness to fairness and opportunity. Billionaires Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates are commonly included in wealth inequality discussions with the poorest half, those in low-income countries, ethnic minorities, and rural populations.
According to the World Inequality Report 2026 by the World Inequality Lab, the top 10% of global earners earn more than the rest, which is the remaining 90%. The poorest half possesses less than 10% of the global income. The top 10% earners have enormous income, possessing 75% of global wealth as the bottom half possesses an astonishing 2%, showcasing the extreme wealth concentration. Another report further reinforces the global wealth disparity, where the wealthiest 0.001%, less than 60,000 multi-millionaires, control triple the wealth than half of the total global population.
Many have begun to ask why wealth is distributed the way it is. A variety of factors keep the wealth disparities high. Some policies favor the wealthy, such as tax cuts and lower taxes on large incomes. Another reason includes the opportunity of asset growth, as the richer population has large ownership of stock and real estate as stock and housing price increases. While the wealthy maintain or enlarge their capital, the poorest stay stagnant due to low wages, already high and rising living costs, lack of unions, and policy that doesn’t assist them.
The concentration of wealth has clearly shown effects on everyday lives of lower-income households. As the income of the poorest stays the same, the struggle to meet basic needs continues. Healthcare, housing, and education become scarce. Those who start struggling often continue struggling. Consequently, the inequality continuously brings down the overworked, underpaid, looping back to increasing basic needs for everyone.
