On Nov. 26, 2025, a deadly fire broke out at the Wang Fuk Court apartment complex located in the Tai Po District of Hong Kong. There are eight buildings that make up the apartment complex and one building was unaffected. It took nearly two days for emergency services to extinguish the flames. There were reports that no sirens went off when residents tried to activate the fire alarm; nor a confirmed cause of the fire amidst ongoing investigations.
However, people suspect that the cause was a negligent construction firm’s use of unsafe materials. Investigators found some windows sealed with a foam material on a building. There was also green mesh and bamboo scaffolding that surrounded the apartment buildings. These materials are highly flammable and spread fire easily.
More than 4,600 people lived in this apartment complex and there are at least 160 people dead. There are as many as 79 people who suffered from injuries. Countless people are in mourning over the lives that are lost and missing. Hong Kong authorities have arrested 13 people on suspicion of manslaughter. Owners of the apartments that were affected by the fire were given HK$100,000 by authorities for the loss of income. They have also offered HK$10,000 to each household as an emergency fund.
There is an independent committee led by Judge David Lok Kai-hong that will have nine months to investigate the Tai Po fire. The investigation will focus on what caused the fire and the situation surrounding it. The Tai Po fire has been Hong Kong’s deadliest fire since 1948, where a warehouse fire killed 179 people. Companies like Xiaomi and Alibaba Group have donated millions of Hong Kong dollars to help the victims with medical assistance and resettlement. Numerous celebrities, like Jackson Wang and Cecilia Cheung, have also donated their money to help the victims.
