After OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, a hot topic emerged, sparking debates across businesses, government, education, and other fields. People are debating whether AI is good or bad for society. The answer isn’t as simple as it seems.
When people were asked how they felt about the introduction of advanced AI(today.yougov.com), 54% of Americans said they were skeptical, 22% said they were worried and unsure, and 19% said they were ecstatic about it. A crucial aspect or ability that AI possesses that causes these mixed emotions is the ability to examine all the details of the question it’s asked before making a decision that’s better than most people if asked the same question.
AI is a field of computer science that creates software, systems, and machines that are capable of completing tasks that previously could only be done with human intelligence. There’s been a big controversy about AI since late 2022, but it’s actually been around much longer. Apps like digital maps like Google and Apple, Autocorrect spelling features like Grammarly, chatbots like ChatGPT, and search and recommendation algorithms actually use AI.
AI has provided many benefits to society so far. AI helps improve efficiency and productivity. By using AI, a small business can reduce the investment time and resources they would need for human employees. AI can perform data analysis and generate content, which is amazing, but AI isn’t perfect yet, so of course, you still need to fact-check it.
They also have enhanced decision-making. AI analyzes a large dataset for the questions it’s asked. It uses that dataset to make decisions as best as it can. With this humongous dataset, it will answer your questions accurately for the most part. This helps make better decisions or moves for specific businesses, allowing them to fill in holes where they may not have thrived.
Some drawbacks AI has caused are unemployment and job displacement. With the help of AI, many companies have used AI to save time and money. They have replaced certain jobs like manufacturing, retail checkout, data entry, and more. With how advanced AI is, many companies are considering replacing workers with AI because they do not need sleep and they also don’t need to be paid. This allows companies to spend less on hiring workers and more into automation.
Videos and plagiarism are another issue with AI. AI is an open source, meaning it’s open to everyone. With the ability of AI, people are able to create any video or picture they want, even with no related skills. It is terrifyingly accurate and has been improved so much that it’s difficult to identify an AI-generated video.
An issue that concerns the academic category is plagiarism. AI like ChatGPT and other chat-bots can generate essay prompts that would usually take a whole hour in mere minutes. It’s nearly impossible to check for plagiarism if the student reviewed the completed essay properly. Even with AI checkers’ help with the issue a little, it isn’t a perfect solution, as it will mark students sometimes with plagiarism who are innocent.
AI isn’t just for businesses or asking questions; it’s everywhere, we use it every day, whether it’s a GPS map or a friend you can talk to. It is still an important asset people use in everyday life. Even with the drawbacks of AI, the benefits from AI and the potential it has outweigh the drawbacks. What do you think? Is AI good or bad for society?
