This year, our school’s ASB made a splash this spring with its SELPA Spring Dance, a special celebration hosted for special education students across the Alhambra Unified School District. This year’s theme, Under the Sea, turned the venue into a vibrant underwater world filled with colorful decorations, fun activities, and nonstop excitement.
But before the dance could make waves, a lot of planning had to happen behind the scenes. Our ASB worked closely with the SELPA team to brainstorm themes that would be exciting, interactive, and memorable for all students attending. After lots of discussion and idea-sharing, the group finally landed on Under the Sea, the perfect theme to bring a bright, playful energy to the event.
Once the theme was chosen, the preparation kicked into full gear. For weeks, ASB members brainstormed and planned activities that would keep students entertained throughout the event. From games like Pin the Tail and Find the Turtle to creative stations like bookmark making and frame decorating, every activity was chosen to encourage students to have fun, get creative, and make memories with friends. ASB painted their own adorable sea creatures, including fish, turtles, jellyfish, and other ocean-inspired decorations that completely transformed the venue. Every detail was carefully thought out, from hanging decorations to table setups, creating the feeling of stepping straight into an underwater adventure.
When the big day finally arrived, all the hard work paid off. The room was full of laughter, dancing, and smiling faces as students participated in activities, showed off their crafts, and took over the dance floor. More than just a dance, SELPA is a celebration of inclusion, community, and bringing students together for a day of pure fun. Thanks to the dedication of our school’s ASB and the SELPA team, this year’s Under the Sea dance was truly a FINtastic success!
