Actor Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan on the television show Grey’s Anatomy passed away recently at the age of 53, following a public battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS. His family confirmed that the actor passed away on February 19 in Los Angeles.
Dane first revealed his ALS diagnosis in April of 2025 after months of medical testing and noticeable symptoms. Over the following year, he spoke very openly about the challenges of living with this progressing disease and became an advocate for ALS awareness and research funding. According to statements released by his family, Dane was committed to helping others who faced the illness despite the fact that his own condition was worsening. He donated to different foundations and became a public advocate for those with ALS, supporting them so they didn’t feel alone.
He was born in San Francisco in `972 and began acting in the 1990s. He portrayed a very confident and charismatic surgeon named McSteamy on the hit show Grey’s Anatomy which became a very popular character as the show went on. Later, he starred in the TNT drama The Last Ship, and HBO’s Euphoria where he played Cal Jacobs.
Following his death, tributes came in from fellow actors, friends, fans, and family members. Former co-stars would describe Dane as warm, humorous, and supportive on set. A recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy even included a tribute montage which honored his legacy and memorable performances. He is now survived by his wife and their two daughters. Although his family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing, Dane released one last message to his fans through a TV-series on Netflix called “Famous Last Words”. Although his life was cut short, Eric Dane leaves behind a lasting impact on television and the millions of fans who connected with his characters throughout his career.
