On August 20, 2024, in the Multiple Purpose Room at San Gabriel High School, an ICC meeting was held to discuss all new fundraising rules. All clubs must send two representatives to these ICC meetings. At the ICC meetings ASB usually covers topics such as candy grams and information for fundraising events. However, at this ICC meeting, new rules were brought to the table which caused disagreements among the clubs.
The first new rule announced is that clubs can not sell anything immediately after school and must wait thirty minutes before starting their fundraiser. This caused a bit of commotion because many were wondering if students would be willing to stay thirty minutes after school to purchase food, drinks, or snacks. This new rule has caused more clubs to sign up for school fundraising events. As a student myself, I would not want to stay thirty minutes after school just to buy something at school when I could have been home already doing homework. This will cause clubs to lose funds as there will be less people to purchase items.
The second rule announced is that no clubs are allowed to use food trucks for fundraising anymore during ASB events, such as, homecoming and Back to School Night. I find this absolutely ridiculous – how are clubs going to make money? Many clubs use food trucks to make win-win profits where they earn a good amount of profit for their club. During these ASB events, clubs are able to gain more money because there will be more students attending. What makes it more ridiculous is that ASB is still allowed to use food trucks to fundraise during such events. This is extremely unfair. When signing up for these fundraisers, it is on a first-come, first-serve basis for clubs. Yet ASB is allowed to pick and have their fundraisers before releasing the fundraising sheet.
Many students find this change in fundraising unfair. Why is ASB allowed to use food trucks but other clubs are not? Many clubs are trying to find other ways to increase funding for their club, however, it seems like these clubs are going through challenge after challenge. The school and ASB should be finding ways to make sure clubs are able to make funds or this will lead to the school not having as many clubs as we have now. Even though the point of being a club is to come up with creative activities and fundraisers to gain money for the club, these rules are very limiting to student creativity and club fundings.
