On June 27th of this year, popular music artist Kevin Abstract released a new album titled “Blush.” The album consists of 18 tracks, each featuring different artists except for one, titled “Blush Interlude.” The main theme of this album is about heartbreak and recovery after a breakup. In comparison to Abstract’s first album “Blanket,” which was released after the disbandment of his former group BROCKHAMPTON and had a lonely tone to it, Blush feels comforting and familiar.
In a recent interview with Zach Sang, he mentions that he went through a breakup which helped fuel his inspiration for this album. Another factor being how Abstract returned to his hometown in Houston, Texas which helped him reset both creatively and emotionally. Blush was built with a variety of different artists featuring Dominic Fike, JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown, and Houston music artists such as Love Spells and SoGone SoFlexy, further fueling a sense of “homecoming” in this album.
Most popular tracks from fans are Doggy, Geezer, and Maroon according to Spotify’s stream count. Lyrics from Doggy have a theme of heartbreak and bitter memories which can be seen with the lyrics, “We had potential, but you can’t help falling out.” Geezer reflects wanting more than what you have, being stuck in between hope and longing for something as reflected in the lyrics “I know it’s a small town, but the mall looks small now. I guess the lesson is never let your guard down.” In the track Maroon, key themes are reflection and growth as he moves on, “Au revoir, goodbye, so long, farewell.”
Blush consists of different genres; it mixes styles like indie rock, R&B, and electronic, seamlessly blending them together into tracks that their fans and audience love. Some of the transitions from track to track feel sudden. However, it fits the album’s theme of rediscovering. The feeling that comes from Blush touches the hearts of many fans who enjoy its melodic and lyrical aspect.
