There are many different ways in which people reconnect with their culture and heritage.. One of the most common ways is through old games and sports in which families share their love for. Not all families originate from the same place or relate to each other, however, these are a few ways to reconnect and engage with one’s roots.
For starters, a very common Mexican game in which everyone can enjoy including smaller children is Loteria. Loteria is a form of bingo. This game can be played with money for some more fun. To begin, there is a price set for each game card; this price can vary, then someone is assigned to be the card reader. The card reader is to shuffle the cards and maintain them faced down, the card reader is also able to play the game. To continue, everyone gets however many game cards they want and will pay for each card. All the money accumulated is for the winner of each round, it can be played with different winners a round. For example, if someone gets a line across or if they get the full card, this way it allows for more winners and engagement. Lastly, everyone gets a set number of tokens to place on their game card when an image is called. When all rules and everyone has gotten settled in the game is ready to start and the fun will flow.
Another common game is Toma todo. This is a Mexican originated game that is played with a topa. The topa is top with multiple sides, each having a different action. To start the game a price is set such as twenty-five cents and everyone puts in their quarter into the middle and the game begins. This will start clockwise and each player will go around spinning the top. The top will say: Toma Uno: Take one quarter, Toma Dos: Take two quarters from the pot, Toma Todo: Take all the quarters, Pon Uno: Put in a quarter, Pon Dos: Put in two quarters, Todos Ponen: All players put in a quarter. This game is continuous and when there is no longer any money in the middle the game restarts. The rules can vary based on how it is chosen to be played by the players themselves, however, no matter what the game creates a vibrant and exciting environment.
Most commonly known in the U.S is the game of soccer, yet the word Futbol is what carries the deepest roots throughout the world. Whatever people chose to call it, they still share the same love, joy, and excitement for such a beautiful sport. There are many different soccer teams around the world which represent different communities, countries, and cities which is what adds to the beauty of the sport. Many people around the world find a community within the sport. The love of soccer is able to be shared through generations keeping the sport alive and families united.
Overall there are many different ways the latin community is able to connect to their roots. These are simply a few ways to have fun and embrace a side of the community that is so welcoming and entertaining. Not everyone may enjoy them, however they are something everyone should try. Go out, have fun, try something new, or old even if you may not enjoy it, it is always worth the try to reconnect with family and friends.
